In Abi Spring's work many layers of paint are built up, and then sanded through revealing an extremely detailed record of the painting process. The resulting smooth surfaces are similar to the intricate surface of polished marble or stone, cool and smooth to the touch.

The brush stroke is the primary mark or figure in these paintings, which is the result of the work being about the act of painting. Sanding exposes layers, which functions as a record. Each layer functions as a frame documentary film, accumulating in the finished work, and revealing the process of its making. This work is both made by the actions and decisions of painting, and is about that process.

The white paintings are part of a series that explore a very limited palette. The use of very subtle color opposites creates a visual tension making the surface of the work hard to locate, drawing the patient viewer to the work.
